EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
