Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
